On April 11th 2009, I decided to work for one year as a freelance journalist. I have no other income except from what I write for publications. The economic pressure to get a part-time job is strong as my money runs out, and I'm a wicked procrastinator. Yet cheques do arrive once in a while...

Social News Sites Help Drive Traffic

Online freelance journalism. *sigh* Or: giving away your work for free...

OK: Sites like Orato and this blog make money from Adsense ads that accompany content. Each time a visitor sees an Adsense ad they are interested enough to click, Google makes money, and the hosting site (Orato or this blog) gets a cut of the money.

Therefore, the key to making moola from your stories or blog posts is to get lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of visitors to your Orato stories or your blog posts so the likelihood of a visitor clicking an ad is as high as possible. So how to get more traffic?

In the case of Orato, a site where freelance journalists post "real" news, one way to get eyeballs to your site is to link your story to social news sites. Two of the most popular sites are Digg and Reddit.

At Orato, if you like a story you read, you can "Digg" it by recommending it to other Digg readers.

For example, I recently wrote a piece on "The Year of the Métis." I'm trying to advertise the story, so I "Dugg" it. I also linked it to Reddit. If people find the story interesting, they will recommend it to others.

I'm a complete amateur at this, and so far I've made enough money from Orato and various blogs to buy about six coffees. (Not the fancy ones, just regular old coffees.)
